How did you first become involved in roller derby?
Evolution, really. As a kid, I loved roller skating and went to the local skating rink (Moonlight Rollerway) on a regular basis. I was always waiting for my jam, Madonna’s “Vogue,” to come on so I could skate around thinking I was the coolest. That love for skating also led me to play roller hockey with all the neighborhood boys growing up. As an adult, I skated less and less, always hoping someone would woo me by taking me on a date to a skating rink - but, I was always rolling solo. So, when I heard about Derby Lite, I signed up for a session. It was there that I met Estrella Negra, Casey Mace’em, Goose Cannon, and Wholigan and they told me all about The Outfit. We all passed advanced tryouts in 2012 (Wholigan tried out later that year) and the rest is history!

Q: How did you first become involved in roller derby?
A: A friend asked me to try out for roller derby with her. She knew all about the sport and I knew nothing but I wanted to support her so I tried out with her just for fun. I fell in love with it right away. She quit a week later because she was afraid she was going to break a bone. But I stuck with it and here I am with all my bones still never broken.

Q: What is your favorite thing about the Chicago Outfit?
A: When I transferred to the Chicago Outfit from Sacred City Derby girls last season I wasn’t sure what to expect or if that was where I belonged. When I saw all the smaller jammers kicking butt such as Lola Blow, Queefer Sutherland, Shebiscuit and Loka-In-Motion, I got really excited. I hadn’t seen many smaller roller derby girls like myself kicking butt. After watching them I knew that I could learn a lot from the Chicago Outfit and that I belonged there.

Q. How did you first become involved in roller derby?
A. Long ago I attended try-outs for the now defunct Chi-Town Sirens with my partner in all things- the then Nicole, soon to be La Femme Nikita, now Final Frontier. I was unsure at first, skating for over a month in a pair of Fleetwood Roller Rink’s finest squeaky rentals, but was soon drafted to one of the two Sirens home teams and took the oath. After only a few months of exposure I couldn’t shake my new addiction to the scent of coated wood flooring and the hypnotic neon carpeting. Turns out some years later I still enjoy extreme roller sports enough to play for the majority of my free time.

Long-Time Skater, First-Time Bouter

I was recently approached by the head of the Outfit blog to interview a skater new to the Shade Brigade about her experience bouting with a new team. Initially my mind went straight to scanning the skaters new to the Outfit this season, trying to pick one that had been bumped up these past few months. But then it hit me; I didn’t necessarily need a brand new skater.

New to the Shade and new to the Outfit were two different things entirely. That being said, I had the honor of interviewing skater Ante Madder on her Shade bouting experience. Ante Madder is an incredibly talented, strong skater who has been on the Outfit for years, but because of job and family obligations was never capable of making eligibility for bouts. Until this season, that is.

Personally I’ve come to know Ante Madder much better this season than last and I couldn’t be more ecstatic about that fact. Not only is she a fabulous skater and edition to the Outfit bout rosters, but she’s also an incredibly kind, level-headed person. I love skating with her and you all deserve to know a bit more about her.

Q: How did you first become involved in roller derby?
A: I became involved as a fan. I started going to the Chicago Outfit’s home bouts and events about a year or two ago. I became an NSO (Non-Skating Official) after I saw that The Outfit needed NSO’s and refs on FB in January of this year. Read more
