Shebiscuit
“She’ll Come from Behind”
Hometown: John Hughes Movie, U.S.A.
Derby position: Jammer
How did you get into derby? I just joined, I knew very little except that roller derby in all of its feminist origins showed up in a fringe way at things that I liked to attend and that Tine Bomb was tattooing my best friend. There’s really no story, persay. I moved here and I wanted a group of people to know and an athletic/self-defining pursuit to move me into a better place in my life. I wanted to feel strong on my own accord. Derby was a fast track to all sorts of people and a serious reset for me. I came in alone and knowing no one, and now I have a whole family because of it.
Say you had a power animal…what personifies you? In real life? i’m some sort of Sugar Glider-human in my love of fleece blankets and fresh fruit and my tendency to be nocturnal. In my own perception? I’m a Wolverine. Did you know they climb high, impassible mountains for no reason other than to prove they can? Sometimes they die doing it. It’s bizarre, from a nature standpoint.
What is your pre-bout ritual? I drink a bunch of beet juice, usually work a few hours at a bike shop, and ride, in full sprint with my gear on my back, to the fieldhouse to set up the floor. At away bouts, I run around the track and do sprint intervals. If i stay sweaty and distracted until I’m on the jam line, everything’s cool, I want my body to feel warm and powerful. I want my brain to be a physical extension of my body. I meticulously pack my bag. I eat very little. Best be hungry.
