9 to 5: How the Chicago Outfit Rocked Monumental Mayhem.
I wasn't lucky enough to go to Indianapolis to watch Monumental Mayhem in person, but I did watch (almost) every minute of the Outfit's 4 bouts on WFTDA's live stream, and I have to tell you: if you weren't watching, you missed some incredible derby action. I'm no sports writer, so I'll refer you to these fine recaps for the nitty-gritty details:
To summarize: the first bout of the tournament was enough to give us all heart attacks. We lost to Arch Rival by three points, sending them on to fight the Windy City Rollers, our noble neighbors, and sending the Syndicate on to the consolation brackets where they fought like crazy to win fifth place. Three more bouts (two on Saturday and one on Sunday) had the Syn showing their very best moves, their very cleverest strategies, and though all bouts were closely matched, the Syn won each of them. And, equally exciting, Sweet Mary Pain was named Tournament MVP. It may have had something to do with her 34 point jam on Friday, or her 800 lead jammer moments throughout the tourny, or just that she's amazing. Here she is celebrating her new title:
And finally, a huge thank you to Stearns Images for taking some amazing photos throughout the tournament. Go Like them on Facebook and check out the photos!
Here's what you need to know for the test on Tuesday: The Chicago Outfit is now ranked 5th in the North Central region of WFTDA, and Sweet Mary Pain is the North Central tournament MVP. The Syndicate is made of win. Congratulations!!
