Join the Family - No Skates Required! by Strong Female Character

"Wait, what do you mean you won’t be skating?"

My name is Strong Female Character, and I am an official for The Chicago Outfit.  More specifically, I divide my time as a referee and as an NSO, a non-skating official.  While I love donning the stripes of a ref, my journey over the past year and a half as an NSO has been incredible.

“So, wait, if I came to a game, would I see YOU” “But I thought you’d be on skates?!”

Here’s the thing about being an NSO:  It’s not a flashy job.  We keep score, track penalties, and record who’s on the track.  We’re perfectionists.  There are very few NSO positions where non-officials notice you, unless something goes wrong. NSOs make sure that the bout clock is accurate, that penalties are served, and that post-game stats are accurate and useful.  It’s harder than it looks, but it’s exciting and fun and totally fulfilling. Without NSOs, the game would not function as you know it. “So like, you get paid, right?” “Wait, you’re going WHERE on Saturday night?” “You just really want to skate, don’t you?”

The derby officials I know dedicate an incredible amount of time and effort to volunteer for the development and continuance of the sport.  NSOs show their love for the sport in beautifully nerdy or obsessive ways.  We go out for beers and talk about game stats.  We GChat friends to tell them about the new stopwatches we bought.  We’re excited about office supplies and effective communication.  We constantly analyze our own performance and try to be better at what we do.

Have you been searching for a way to get involved with roller derby, but don’t have an interest in strapping wheels to your feet?  Want to officiate the game and even possibly travel with some pretty cool people?  Then we’d love to have you.  We’re always on the lookout for people who have the drive to become amazing NSOs.  All you need to do is commit to showing up to league scrimmages once a week, and we’ll train you and get you started with all the rest.
