Sam EH Shocker

Q: How did you first become involved in roller derby? A: My friend Martha Walls sent me a random text message, one day, asking if I could roller skate. She usually challenges me with fun fitness ideas so I said, 'No, but I can give it a try.' I guess I owe it all to my good friend Martha. :) Q: What is your favorite thing about the Chicago Outfit? A: There are so many things I love about The Chicago Outfit. Everyone is so welcoming and encouraging. One thing I still find very scary, but at the same time really enjoyable, is that all the teams practice together. That from the very first practice you get to skate with, and learn from the very best.

Q: Is there anyone you would like to "Thank" for your total derby domination? A: My husband has been unbelievably supportive in my new sport/total addiction. Without his encouragement I probably wouldn't have gone for it. He even made me a sign for my first game!

Q: What advice do you have for aspiring derby gals? A: Practice! Go to all the practices!

Q: Did you play sports before roller derby?  If so what, and what was your position? A: When I was younger, sports were a huge part of my life. I grew up playing hockey. I can remember my dad shuffling me to up to three games a day, at three different rinks. I am pretty sure when we were looking at houses, my dad was concerned about what hockey district we would be in, and whether the local rink was within walking distance.

Q: What do you do when you are not playing roller derby? A: When I'm not playing roller derby, I am a busy mother of three. Two beautiful little girls, ages one and four, and my oldest handsome boy who is twelve.

Q: How has being part of a team impacted your life on and off the track? A: I have to say, as cheesy as it sounds, that I love the friendships that being on a team brings. Moving here as an adult, it's been difficult to meet people. Now I know a whole team of awesome ladies with similar interests, and I couldn't be happier about it.

Q: Most embarrassing moment on skates? A: Ahhh! This happened not too long ago, actually, and I'm still super embarrassed about it. So, it was my turn to jam, and I got a penalty. Being new and confused, I looked to the referee for guidance, and he said "take a lap", meaning go to the box. Me, being very new to the sport, decided to take him word for word, and I took a lap. Ugh! He meant go to the box! So I skated another lap, but was skating fast to make up for the ridiculous lap-for-nothing I just took, and missed the box....another lap around! Finally, I made it to the penalty box. But not before dying of embarrassment.

Q: Derby crush? A: I have a derby crush on my fabulous derby wife, Marilyn Monroll. What can I say? I'm monogamous. Lol.

Q: Significance of derby name/number? A: Being born an raised in Canada, I needed something Canadian in my name, eh!
