New skater here--#smashtag. Engineer, nerd, bicyclist, and a new blogger for the Outfit. I just graduated from college and found myself with a void in my life. With no homework, classes to attend, or student org meetings, what was I supposed to do with my free time? Five months into my post-graduation life of 9-to-5, I was wondering is this it? Then the Outfit posted about derby boot camp.
Ever since seeing my first bout, I thought derby would be the best sport to play; but with no skating experience, I had no idea how to get into it. The boot camp provided the perfect opportunity to learn to skate and meet some of the team. By the end of the first boot camp, I knew I'd be back--skating was exactly what I had been looking for.
Now I spend my days thinking about derby and my nights practicing derby. I’m happy, getting fit, and have a great group of new friends. One-point-five months after tryouts, I’ve finally figured out a schedule that allows me to attend more practices, and I’m hoping more practices lead to more skills, because as fresh meat, there’s really nowhere to go but up from here.
