Introducing #999 Satanik Hispanik
Hello and Happy New Year!! To start out 2018 here on Derby Talk Tuesday, we are introducing one of our new members, Satanik Hispanik:
I started derby later in life at 30 years old. Unlike some of my bad ass teammates, I was not an athlete growing up. Not for lack of trying. I mean, I joined the bowling league and had a 120 average. :)
I joined softball and was so 'good' that they made me manager (score keeper). I was in marching band, so I guess that counts. You think I'm joking, but this is my life!!! Reflecting back, those activities just weren't my 'thing'.
In 2011, a childhood friend, my hetero life partner, my bff, my wifey <3 Zombilena <3 suggested for us to go skating. I have always skated off and on since I was 5 years old. As a preteen I spent many a night at Fleetwood Roller Rink getting the DJ to play my brother's mix tape and they actually did. So, naturally, it was great to get back on skates.
Zombilena later suggested trying derby. "WTF is that?" I questioned. I then researched, joined Derby Lite and speed skating, and studied my ass off.
Finally, after months of hard work, we gained the confidence to try out for a team and made our way to the lovely and respectable Aurora 88s. I spent 2012-2016 with these bad asses, but life got in the way of derby and I had to retire from the league. During my last years with the 88s I also joined the Chicago Red Hots and Midwest Allstars that play a different rule set (FIRS).
But something was missing. My WFTDA heart was aching and after many failed attempts, life finally allowed me to join The Chicago Outfit roller derby league.
I love that I see so many faces on this league that have been there with me since my inception into the sport.
I love that I get to start my 6th year in derby with new and old derby friends challenging me.
I love roller derby.
I love The Chicago Outfit. <3 <3 <3
